On average Americans consume 245 calories a day from drinks. Switch from juice, soda, and other calorie drinks to water. 245 calories a day add up to 90,000 calories a year. That’s 25 pounds.

Are soda and juice really that good? Another fact is that despite their calories, drinks like soda and juice don’t trigger a feeling of fullness the way foods do.

Eat five or six smaller meals a day instead of three large meals a day. Eating more meals with smaller portions results in eating 30% fewer calories. Furthermore, even the same number of calories eaten in smaller portions during more frequent meals can result in weight loss. You’re less likely to binge because the body releases less insulin.

Make sure your wardrobe only includes the “skinny” clothes. If you don’t have clothes that are comfortable when you’re fat, you’re more likely to be reminded to keep slim every time you dress. And you’re less likely to gain weight if doing so means having to purchase a whole new wardrobe.

Switch to smaller plates. It’s proven that people eat what’s in front of them. Smaller plates mean smaller portions, so put the salad plates into use as the main plate.

Try serving meals on the plate, restaurant style, rather than in bowls and on trays. When the plate is empty the meal is over, instead of spooning another portion onto your plate.

Avoid white foods such as white bread, sugar, and white rice. Those foods are loaded with carbohydrates which lead to higher blood sugar and weight gain. Stick to whole grain breads and dark rice. Don’t worry about the sugar, pretty soon you won’t miss it.

My family started to follow a simple healthy eating plan and it was in continuous success. It has been keeping us healthy for years now.

The focus is to keep it plain and simple. Not only do you get to be healthy, but you also enjoy what you eat. Let us start with the foods that we should not eat.

We don’t eat all kinds of processed foods. No sweets, white flour, processed oils, white flour, white rice, fried foods. Definitely no junk foods or eating at any fast food stores as well. We don’t drink sodas, coffee and alcohol, even fruit juices.

You might think that everything is a no. This free healthy eating plan will guide you to everything that you need to know.

This diet plan should focus on eating natural whole foods.

For instance, we have to eat lots of fruits and vegetables, but that is just not enough, the trick here is that you have to eat at least nine servings everyday. To do this, you have to eat some per meal, even during snack time.

Fresh and organic foods are the best, but if it isn’t available, frozen foods can be used as a substitute.

Because milk is a processed food, we don’t drink it, but we still need to include dairy in our diet. We eat low-fat organic yogurt, kefir and cheese, and some no-salt organic butter to add with.

Olive oil is a natural ingredient, and it’s our main choice for cooking foods and salads.

The cheese that we intake are generally, cheddar, Swiss, mozzarella or feta, and we never go overboard with it. Fresh fruits and raw nuts are best for sweetening a plain yogurt and kefir.

We only use whole grains, because of its great benefits. Whole grains include, breads that are mostly sprouted, cereals, rice and pastas. They have much greater flavor and give more nutrition as you get used to it.

By sprouting the whole grains before using it, you increase their protein and digestibility. Do make sure that you use products with no added sugar, so double check.

Just like bread, eggs are a staple in our home. We eat them in different ways, depending on what you prefer, if you want it, scrambled, omelette, egg toast, poach, or hard boiled.

Even if we don’t eat meat everyday, we have fish and poultry intake regularly. Both foods offer a great source of lean protein and the fish adds more benefit by the rich source of omega 3 fatty acids it offers.

It’s not enough that we eat in a healthy way. We still take food supplements to be sure that we get all the essential fatty acids, amino acids, fiber, vitamins, minerals and the phytonutrients that we need to keep ourselves well and healthy.

And, this is my family’s free healthy eating plan. All that is left for you to know right now is to drink lots of water, and if you want to lose weight, burn more calories of what you eat daily.

Why do our College Students Drink?

The simplest answer to this is they most obvious, it’s because they can.

Alcohol abuse is an easy trap to fall into. Repeat offenders are not disciplined, there are so few immediate penalties for extreme drinking, students get varied messages from the college administration about alcohol, parents are not notified about their children’s drinking activities, students are not told about the long-term negative outcomes of alcohol abuse, students have seen their parents drinking alcohol in an reckless manner, minors or intoxicated students are served alcoholic beverages by the local drinking establishments, there are few alcohol-free social and leisure activities that are attractive to students, and the drinking activities in the sororities and fraternities are not monitored are all reasons leading to not only drinking but excessive drinking.

What might compel a student to drink alcohol? Without adding peer pressure or influence to the mix, when ignoring that drinking alcohol only temporarily removes a person from his or her problems, when overlooking the idea or perception that drinking alcohol makes it easier to interact with possible dating or sexual partners, when casting aside it being so tolerable to participate in activities that highlight the drinking of alcohol, when the “good feelings” or the “fun” of getting an alcohol high or buzz are not considered, and when the party atmosphere at college is no longer an expectation by students, only then does it become harder to determine what might cause college students to abuse alcohol. For all of the reasons above are factors in driving our college campuses to alcohol abuse.

It needs to begin with more than just education. While making students knowledgeable to the dangers out there, especially in regards to the prevention of drug or alcohol abuse, it is not the only answer to the struggle with these issues at our colleges.

Proactive and Reactive Measures. With respect to alcohol abuse in higher education, many reactive AND proactive measures have been initiated at some colleges and universities that have reduced the availability, acceptability, and irresponsibility of alcohol use on and off campus. The result: a noticeable, if not a significant reduction in alcohol-related problems manifested by students.

What are some of these measures? Establishing immediate consequences for excessive drinking, disciplining repeat alcohol abuse offenders, notifying parents about their children’s drinking activities, eliminating mixed messages by college administrators about alcohol (for instance, removing alcohol advertisements from stadiums and from sports brochures), informing students about the long-tern negative consequences of alcohol abuse, increasing alcohol-free social and recreational activities that are attractive to students, having college administrators talk to the owners of local drinking establishments so that minors and/or intoxicated students are not served alcohol, and monitoring the drinking activities in the sororities and fraternities.

Medical Research and Treatment Are Not Enough. I assert, however, that the above proactive and reactive measures, most of which are NOT education-based, are needed to compliment educational approaches. Why? I am enough of a realist to believe that even if medical research eventually discovers viable ways to escape addiction and if the medical community is able to offer effective treatment to all who need it, there will always be those who, for whatever reason, will choose to disregard medical warnings, ignore their health, and who will discount common sense as they involve themselves in alcohol and/or drug abuse.

How You Can Cut Down on Your Drinking

If you believe that you are drinking too much you can recover your life and health by reducing your alcohol consumption. What exactly entails drinking too much? Read the following questions and answer “yes” or “no”:

Do you drink alone when you feel angry or sad? Does your drinking ever make you late for work? Does your drinking worry your family? Do you ever drink after telling yourself you won’t? Do you ever forget what you did while you were drinking? Do you get headaches or have a hang-over after you have been drinking? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, you may have a drinking problem. Check with your doctor to be sure. Your doctor will be able to tell you whether you should cut down or abstain. If you are alcoholic or have other medical problems, you should not just cut down on your drinking–you should stop drinking completely. Your doctor will advise you about what is right for you.

If your doctor tells you to cut down on your drinking, these steps can help you:

1. Write down the reasons you wish to cut down or stop.

Why do you want to drink less? There may be a number of reasons why you want to cut down or stop drinking. The reasons may be to improve your health, sleep better, or get along better with your family or friends. Make a list of all the reasons why you want to drink less.

2. Set a goal of how much you will drink.

Decide, before you begin drinking, on a limit for how much you will drink. You may decide to cut down or not to drink at all. If you are cutting down, keep below these limits:

Women: No more than one drink a day

Men: No more than two alcoholic drinks per day

A drink is:

one 12-ounce bottle of beer; one 5-ounce glass of wine; or one 1 1/2-ounce shot of liquor. Depending on any medical issues you may have these limits may be too high. Talk with your doctor and decide on a limit that is right for you.

Write your goal on a piece of paper. Put it where you can see it daily, such as on your refrigerator or bathroom mirror.
